Doble Jaw Surgery in details

Double jaw surgery (also known as two-jaw surgery or bimaxillary osteotomy correction ) is used to achieve both functional improvement and aesthetic appearance. This surgery was named double/two jaw surgery because it alights the upper and lower jaws. By doing so, it corrects protruding mouth and/or receding chin and helps in cases of malocclusion and facial asymmetry.

Surgery details:

The surgery itself takes 1 to 2 hours, but before that, a thorough medical examination and surgery planning must be done in order to ensure satisfying and safe results! After the surgery patient is suggested to stay in the hospital for two more days so the surgeon could check his/her condition. Double jaw surgery method:

1. A surgeon individually analyzes the case of each patient and creates a surgery plan deciding the site to be cut and predicting the changes in face shape.

2. The occlusal plane rotation method is applied to rotate the upper jaw and move it to the right position.

3. The lower jaw is cut (mandible surgery method) to move it to the proper position for the right occlusion with the upper jaw.

4. The fractured bones are firmly fixed.

Post-surgery care:

Double jaw surgery is the one that required post-op care that should be provided with care and strictly following the surgeon’s instructions. First of all for the first couple of days after the surgery the diet should only include liquid food that doesn’t require any chewing. The special bondage should be worn for a couple of weeks to help with the swelling and bruising. Also deswelling procedures (for example UV light treatment can make a big difference in the recovery).

Post-surgery treatments:

Double jaw surgery is the major surgery that requires not only basic post-surgery care but some serious procedures too. One and most important of them is the need for orthodontic treatment. The problem is that after the readjustment of the jaws the teeth start to change their positions too. Usually, it takes several months to these movements for these movements to finish. In most of the cases braces are used after that in order to obtain the best fit of the upper and lower teeth in the new position of the jaws. This can take from 3 months to 1 year. The result is the correct facial outline and refines tooth alignment.
