What is gynecomastia?

It is a phenomenon when the breast of a man is protruded like a female breast.

Sometimes this happens due to female hormones increase that stimulates the inactivate mammary glands and male breast starts to grow.

Another reason for male breast protrusion is an excess of the fat tissue due to overweight. This phenomenon sometimes called pseudogynecomastia and also can be treated surgically.

What is gynecomastia surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is a surgery that reduces the men’s breast size and creates more masculine-looking breast shape. There are several methods based on the composition of protruded breasts and the right one should be chosen by the surgeon during the consultation. In some cases due to the breast protrusion the shape and size of the nipple and areola can change. These changes also can be redone during the surgery.

How to diagnose gynecomastia?

Front view

1. When the breast is protruded enough to be grabbed by the hand and its shape is round in general

2. When the nipples and areola become larger than average (more than 6mm for the nipples, 30mm for the areola)

3. When the nipples are caving in when pressed

Side view

1. When the nipples are pointy

2. When the areola and its surrounding area is generally protruded

Gynecomastia can be easily diagnosed by palpation of the area around the nipple. If there is a zone that distinctively harder than the surroundings, it can be a sign of gynecomastia.

If you take an ultrasound, you can get an accurate diagnosis of the presence and size of the female breast.

Surgical method

As was said before there are several methods of Gynecomastia surgery. To be more precise three: liposuction technique, incision technique and the combination of liposuction and incision techniques.

Liposuction technique

Is applied in case of breasts enlarged by the accumulation of fat due to obesity.

Depending on the amount and positioning of the fat one or several small incisions are made. After that, a hollow tube called a cannula is inserted throw the incision. Then the surgeon moves the cannula back and forth to loosen the fat inside the breasts. After that, the fat is removed with vacuum suction.

Incision technique

Is applied in case of breasts enlarged due to the over-development of the mammary glands. Also, this type of surgery is required when there is a need for nipple reposition or areola reduction to create a more natural and masculine contour. There are different types of incisions and the surgeon will decide which on to perform based on the patient’s individual characteristics.

Combination of liposuction and incision techniques.

It is applied when breasts are enlarged due to the excess of both fat and mammary gland tissues. Two methods described above are performed simultaneously.
