What is cheekbone reduction (zygoma reduction)?

Zygoma reduction reduces protruded cheekbones.

The more protruded the cheekbone (zygoma), the stronger and rougher the impression it gives out. The cheekbones may look more protruded as the cheeks sink due to aging.

Zygoma reduction further reduces the cheekbone through L-shaped osteotomy (bone cut) to make the side and front cheekbone look smaller and forms a natural volume according to the twisting movement of the cheekbones.

Surgery method

1. Cut a part of the front side of the cheekbone in an L shape through oral cavity incision. At this point, adjust the amount of cutting depending on the size of the protruding cheekbone to adjust the size of the cheekbone.

2. Remove bone chips.

(In most cases, a certain amount of bones is removed but if the cheekbones are not too big, the only osteotomy is performed.)

3. Cut and separate the arch on the side of the cheekbone through the incision of the scalp around the sideburns.

4. Rotate and place the separated cheekbone inside.

5. Shave off the rough border surface and firmly fix it with pins.

TIP

The existing zygoma reduction surgery cuts the cheekbone into an I shape and pushes the separated bones inside.

While the width of the cheekbones on the sides is reduced due to the amount of the bones pushed inside, the reduction of the front side of the cheekbones is insignificant. Therefore, this surgery method is not used that much.

However, it is good for patients with a flat front side of the cheekbone with developed cheekbones on the side. Thus, it is important to precisely analyze the cheekbones before performing the surgery.
